I have a confession to make: I don’t like cake.
Growing up I requested birthday pies instead, and my family was always torn about whether or not to add “Happy Birthday Sarabeth” icing on top. Does one add icing to pies? I think you can, mostly because I’ve never met a pie I didn’t like!
I guess this explains why pie goes hand in hand with parties in my household.
The latest party I concocted explored a new recipe that turned classic pies into milkshakes. I like to call this “pie-cycling!” And what fits the milkshake subject better than a 1950s diner theme?
The first thing I did was a little flavor taste-test. I headed to the store and picked up some Marie Callender’s® Dessert Pies and Reddi-Wip® from Walmart.
Fox also decided he was really into a dog toy that looked and squealed like a pig and we didn’t leave that aisle for a good 10 minutes. He’s happy, I’m happy.
When I got home I baked both pies and learned a couple of neat tricks. First I covered the edges of the pies with aluminum foil to avoid any burning and second I brushed the top of the pies with a beaten egg for a gorgeous golden brown color. Worked like a charm!
After the pies were all set I grabbed my trusty helper, the soda jerk, and we got to work. Something tells me he’d get some pretty big tips if this was a reality.
In order to capture the essence of a sock hop, I made a vinyl record backdrop. I did this by tracing a real record (thank you, Barry Manilow Greatest Hits) onto black scrapbooking paper and cutting it out. Then I traced the top of a solo cup onto a colored sheet of paper and made the middle. I finished it off by using a hole punch to create a perfect middle circle and glued all three pieces together.
One of my favorite things on the table is the guest check bunting. I picked up a few guest check pads online, punched two holes in each, and strung along to the base of the milkshake glasses (which I stuffed with tissue paper while they were waiting to be filled with pie milkshake goodness). I made a larger version of this and it looked amazing, although I opted for the smaller string once I saw everything laid out.

Once I was all set up I tried a variety of flavor combos and mix-ins. The sky is the limit with these pie milkshakes! Any flavor pie, whether fruity or something else like pumpkin, pecan, or pumpkin pecan, mixed with any flavor ice cream, and toppings like sprinkles, cherries, syrups, and candy, will be sure to hit the spot for all guests.
My official favorite was this Creamy Razzleberry Pie Shake. It was the best kind of combination of tart versus velvety.
Creamy Razzleberry Pie Shake
Marie Callender’s Razzleberry Dessert Pie
3 scoops vanilla ice cream
Splash of milk
- Add two scoops of vanilla ice cream to cup.
- Mix in one slice of razzleberry pie.
- Add splash of milk followed by remaining scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Mix to your taste. (I like mine chunkier so I mix using a spoon, but if you like yours with even consistency I suggest using a blender.)
- Top with Reddi-wip, maraschino cherry, and chocolate sprinkles. Enjoy!
