Best Spooky Podcasts to Listen to this Fall

September 12, 2017

I have always been obsessed with things that go bump in the night. Scary movies, ghost tours, spooky stories… from a very young age I’ve taken a liking to it all.

I’ve spent the night in haunted spots like the Stanley and the Queen Mary, perused the rooms at the Whaley House, creeped around the Bird Cage Theatre in Tombstone, and heard ghost stories on a walk around haunted Boston, Chicago, and San Diego streets.

Side note: If you’re looking to pee your pants, I highly suggest the Stanley.

Tyler tried to turn me onto podcasts several years ago and I shut down the idea until a friend of mine mentioned that she listened to ghost stories on hers. This opened a whole new world for me!

Aside from ghost stories, I’m also a big true crime fanatic. I sort of feel like these two categories almost go hand-in-hand.

Here are a few of my must-listens right now.

My Favorite Murder

True crime galore. The two gals who run MFM are LA-based, which first piqued my interest. They talk about both classic and little known cases, share listeners’ hometown murders, and have garnered an insanely tight-knit group of followers called “murderinos” who not only discuss former crimes, but create discussion around current cases that may someday lead to helping authorities find answers. #SSDGM

Ghosts in the Burbs

I’m only halfway through the episodes of this podcast, but it has me totally hooked. Basically, you have a writer who puts up a flier asking for her small town’s local ghost stories. She begins receiving messages for people who’d like to share — some unnerving, some flippant, a whole mixture of crazy — and they all start to weave together. At first I thought this was a true story, but now it seems to be written like more of a novel. Time will tell.

Plus there’s been some creepy coincidences from characters on the show, like one woman who was an assisted living facility waitress in high school (like me), bartender in college (still me), and history major (yep, me).

The NoSleep Podcast

If you’ve ever hopped around on Reddit, you may have seen the NoSleep subreddit. Redditors share their fictional stories of things that will send shivers down your spine. The NoSleep Podcast shares those stories, incorporating fun sound effects, voice actors, and background music that breathe life into these scary tales. I listened to this on the way home from girls’ night on Saturday in the dark and kept checking my rearview mirror for someone crouching in the shadow.

Let’s Not Meet Podcast

Another subreddit turned podcast, this pick is fairly new (only 12 episodes at the time I write this) but so very good. The host reads submissions to the Let’s Not Meet subreddit of creepy and unsettling people that real life souls have encountered and never want to again. Most stories are about burglars and would be criminals, but there’s an occasional ghost snuck in there too.

If you listen to these (currently or after reading this), let me know what you think!
