New Year, New Me: My Moment of Yes

Some time ago I saw an article about a woman who counted the amount of time her son looked at her over a period of time — times that she usually would be scrolling through her phone aimlessly. This was a rude awakening for her as it opened her eyes to all the times she failed to connect with her son.

To be honest, I didn’t even bother doing the experiment myself because I knew…

I was guilty as charged.

It’s hard not to be glued to a screen at most times during the day when your child is home all day and both parents work out of the house with various jobs.

So I realized at that point that it was time to enroll him in school.

And boy did I get things done!

But after a small amount of time, I went back to that article about sharing time with your children and realized that I was still unsuccessful in devoting my time and attention to Fox when he came home from school each day.

It was time for another change.

I thought hard about ways to alter the situation and came up with a list of things to implement to make our bond even stronger.

We started a solid bedtime routine with books and bath time, purchased role play toys that allowed for Fox to pretend he was anything from a vet to a cashier and I was his customer, and I shut my computer in the office each night.

But this year, I’m interested in taking it a step further with one solid chunk of time doing something we both love.

Eating dinner!

Because we live in Southern California, we’ve eaten most of our meals in the backyard year-round. Being outside in the fresh air with the sun dipping and the crickets starting to chirp, no screen-time distractions or toys scattered about is incredibly healing and a great opportunity to connect with each other at the end of each day.

We gave it a shot a bit early over a bowl of Well Yes!® Minestrone with Kale Soup.

You could tell Fox felt really special.

Well Yes! uses nutritious ingredients in these soups like anti-biotic free chicken, kale, quinoa, and sweet potatoes minus any artificial colors or flavors — plus their cans are have a bpa-free lining. I highly recommend!
