TBT: Paris in the Spring

September 3, 2015

My first trip overseas was off the cuff. In the middle of wedding planning, Tyler and I decided hop across the pond for a short trip to London and Paris in the spring.

After several whirlwind days in London, we hopped on the Eurostar en route to Paris via the Chunnel. After exchanging currency and finding our charming boutique hotel in the middle of the 6th arrondissement, we decided to wander the streets around where we would be staying. This became a regular occurrence during our trip and some of our fondest memories stem from those hours getting lost.

We didn’t have many plans, but what we did know is that we wanted to ride a token Vespa through the city to discover all of the famed sights. We enlisted the help of Left Bank Scooters to pick us up from our hotel and escort us around. Unfortunately, a torrential downpour thwarted our plans and after drinking way too much espresso we were forced to reschedule. The silvering lining: our day opened up to be able to visit the Louvre and stay out of the bad weather.

After a full day of art appreciation, we ended our evening with several digestifs at Le Nemours (click here to see the cafe – a must do in Paris). The people watching was incredible from the outward facing patio seats.

The next day we got up bright and early for macarons and a walk through the farmers market on our way to the Catacombs. Our private tour of the underground tomb was both intriguing and eerie. Even after walking for several hours, we only saw a small fraction of the over six million human remains. Upon exiting the catacombs we met our Vespa tour guide and were able to successfully navigate the streets of Paris. Highlights included the Eiffel Tour, the Champs-Élysées, and the Paris Opera House (made even better having the ability to pull up and park at the front of each attraction). Ending our tour with a quick bite to eat, we again wandered the streets of Paris stopping in a local wine shop and even catching a few minutes of mass at Norte Dame. By this time we found ourselves surrounded with souvenir shops and decided to become the ultimate tourists: buying and attaching a love lock to the Pont de l’Archevêché (which was just removed with all the others this year *sad face*) and picking up a couple mugs for our wine to enjoy with the light show that night at the Eiffel Tower.

Finding a taxi (or an ATM for that matter) at 1 a.m. proved to be more difficult than expected, and after a long walk and complicated taxi ride we were so ready to hit the hay for our early flight the next day.

Needless to say, we may have hit the major sights, but we’ve left a lot of area to cover one day when we head back.

Until then, here a few Parisian-inspired items that are giving me that familiar itch of yearning to book a plane ticket to France!
