On Friday my lovable little boy decided he was ready to stand without help. While my thought process volleyed somewhere between, “Did I baby proof this room correctly?” and “YAY!” it took a few moments after for something else to settle in: Fox is growing up so quickly right before my very eyes.
At 10 months old he’s went from the little newborn we lovingly nicknamed “Goo” (short for Mr. Magoo because of his squinty eyes and upturned button nose) to a strong, capable boy.
So here’s my confession: I haven’t gotten rid of any of his newborn clothes yet. To be honest, I truly don’t have the heart to.
Anything he has grown out of has sat in bins (and been ripped out of those bins by tiny hands and thrown over tiny shoulders) in his nursery up until today when I put my foot down and decided they needed to go. Well sort of.
Since I’m not ready to donate the clothes or hand them down, I opted to put them away for a while as part of a New Year’s resolution to keep a neat home that’s always ready for company. When I was young, storage was never a problem with a large East Coast basement, but now living in San Diego I’m constantly having to get crafty with storage – especially these days with a kiddo in tow. How does someone so small have so much stuff?
I went to Lowe’s to pick up some storage solutions and wanted to share how I made the best use of my existing space.
I grabbed two packs of these Ziploc® Space Bags® in the 3 Flat Combo Pack that cater to a variety of clothing sizes while keeping them dry and mildew free at 3 times the storage (compared to uncompressed storage volume). I started with the medium bag.
I folded up his tiny onesies and added them to the bag.
The medium sized bag managed to fit 39 onesies, 3 rompers, 5 jammies, 4 t-shirts, 7 shorts, and 2 pants – to put into other words, an entire box of baby clothes.
I made sure not to fill past the line and zipped up once I was done.
Then I used my household vacuum to suck the air out.
The best part was that I was able to utilize the drawers in the base of my guest bed now that the clothes were flat in an airtight bag rather than a large box.
Last but not least, I will leave you with where exactly I found these little miracles – the Home Organization aisle.
