Tax Season, Travel, and Technology

With tax season upon us, many of us are eagerly awaiting that refund check to come in so that we can turn around and spend it on something that has been on our wish list for some time. For me, it was time that I upgraded my smartphone and family plan to a modern network that doesn’t hold me back from keeping my finger on the pulse no matter where I am or how much data I’ve used that month.

If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you’ve probably gathered that I love to travel, from weekend stays nearby, road trips across the country, or extended vacations overseas. Along with the ability to pick up a brand new phone for such a great price, my husband and I decided to use our leftover refund on planning a road trip in the upcoming months.

First things first, I ran to my neighborhood Walmart and looked through the surprising selection of beautiful phones available for the brand new Walmart Family Mobile PLUS! plan, and couldn’t pass up on the gorgeous Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime smartphone (for only $99!). My husband had recently purchased one, and I was mesmerized by the quality, speed and features it had – my favorite being the responsive feedback with every touch to the screen.

Digital Road Trip Necessities - TheFebruaryFox.comI don’t want to get out ahead of myself, but I thought I was seeing things when I read the pricing for the service plan. For $49.88 per month, I get unlimited talk, text and data (with 10GB of 4G LTE data) on T-Mobile’s nationwide network. And that’s it; no overages, fees, hidden charges, etc. The best part is that no matter where I am in the country, I know that my phone will work perfectly and exactly what my bill will be each month. I didn’t have to deal with a credit check, sign a contract, or pay any type of activation fee. I simply put the SIM card in the phone and activated it online, restarted the device and my phone was active. To put the proverbial “cherry” on top, Walmart throws in a free movie every single month (a $7 value) through their VUDU service. We love this because we can watch it (and others) on nearly all of our devices, from our smart TVs and tablets.

I wanted to start my trip planning immediately, so I loaded up my new Android-powered phone with my favorite apps for every trip. I’ve included some of my absolute favorites below.

TripIt

My husband and I have been using TripIt for years now. We would be completely lost without its organizational features and ease of use. Simply forward all of your travel confirmation emails to it, and the app will put together your itinerary for you, complete with confirmation numbers, layover information and even directions between activities.

GasBuddy

This is obviously most important for road trips, but it’s a lifesaver, especially if you’re on a strict budget. Never overpay for gas nearby, and it even provides information on services available, in the event that someone in the car can’t hold it any longer.

Field Trip

Sometimes you just need some spontaneity on your journeys, and Field Trip excels most in situations where you find yourself in a new place without knowledge of the area. Field Trip gives you real-time information and facts about your current location, anywhere in the country (or world). Never miss a landmark or a chance to educate yourself again.

Spotify

Have I mentioned that our family loves music? We take every chance we get to play, dance and sing with each other, and a road trip is the best way to broaden your musical horizons. With unlimited data, we are able to rock out all day and night during the drive and even in our hotel rooms without fear.

Have you filed your taxes yet? If you’re getting a refund, what do you plan on spending it on? Something fun, something necessary, or both?
