Comic Con Inspired Gifts

July 9, 2015

It’s hard not to notice Comic Con wherever you turn when you live in San Diego. Just the other day I was returning from a trip when I ran into a giant, carrot-topped mural at the airport of Conan O’Brien welcoming me home. I wondered what kinds of things the TSA agents would confiscate this time of year: Luke’s lightsaber? Thor’s hammer? Daryl’s crossbow?

On a side note, please tell me that you’ve seen Conan’s Mad Max spoof.

I made it to my first Comic Con last year, after eons of itching to go, only to find out that pregnant women with intense morning (aka all day) sickness don’t fare well with zombie gore and long lines. Alas, I put on a brave face for my too-stoked husband and stayed focused on the impressive cosplay and wondered which celebrity I’d bump into first. Let me tell youthis event is seriously the coolest. And it really says something when recent local polls reported that more people want Comic Con than our NFL team staying put in San Diego.

Setting the mood for the next few days to come, here are my top five gifts inspired by Comic Con 2015.

Monopoly: Game of Thrones Collector’s Edition Board Game

$44.62 | USAopoly | Purchase at Amazon

Winter is coming! This time in the form of a Monopoly board game. Whether you’re fighting for the House of Stark, the Lannisters, or Khaleesi, you can battle your friends for the Iron Throne with this classic (with a twist) game.

Pop! Rides: The Walking Dead – Daryl Dixon’s Chopper

$19.21 | FunKo | Purchase at Amazon

While we’re still waiting for AMC’s The Walking Dead season 6 to premiere in October, over 6,000 people filled the San Diego Convention Center’s Hall H today with every major cast member for not one—but two—panels.

This figurine captures Daryl Dixon’s special brand of cool, but if you’re more into Carol, Maggie, Hershel, or Rick, those are available too.

Star Wars Classic Trilogy Playing Cards – Set of 3 Decks

$8.95 | Cartamundi | Purchase at Amazon

No man cave is complete without this set of vintage-inspired Star Wars playing cards featuring scenes and characters from the classic trilogy. These three unique decks will satisfy any Star Wars fan young and old. Guaranteed not to include any cards depicting Jar Jar Binks.

Doctor Who Journal of Impossible Things and Mini Sonic Screwdriver Pen

$24.95 | Underground Toys | Purchase at Amazon

The trailer for Doctor Who‘s season 9 premiered today at Comic Con giving attendees a sneak peak of the Twelfth Doctor. Give your favorite Time Lord a gift from the world of this iconic franchise. Tardis not included.

Loot Crate Subscription Box

$13.95/month + $6 s/h | Loot Crate | Subscribe at Loot Crate

For a subscription box whose marketing team coined the phrase, “It’s like Comic Con in a box!” I knew I had to include this on my list. Covering a wide range of categories, Loot Crate’s past boxes have contained items like Marvel Comics ice cube trays, Harry Potter luggage tags, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures, and Halo Mega Bloks. For those kids who never really grew up, this is like Christmas in a box each month.

If you’re heading out to Comic Con this year, enjoy! Don’t forget to comment with a photo from the event!
