Happy October!
The beginning of this month marks the rolling out of our Halloween decorations, scary movie marathons, and the start of fireplace season.
Since this is my husband’s first October in Buffalo, I prepped him with a few stories from the past about the weather in our dear town.
I was a sophomore in college when the “October Surprise” rolled in mid-month dropping 2 feet of snow in 48 hours. It’s not uncommon to see snow and ice come to fruition this month! There’s been many a Halloween costume ruined by wearing a snowsuit or heavy winter coat over top.
I remember sitting outside in San Diego dripping sweat while trying to carve a pumpkin that would only last a few days before hitting it’s expiration date, but here in Buffalo we do our dirty work inside the house.
Fox is still a bit young to appreciate carving, so we opted for painting this year and set up shop in the living room.
Painting in the living room?
The same one with a white couch and beautiful, original hardwood floors?
Yep, we did it.
Side note about hardwood flooring: when my husband and I first moved in together, our new place looked and smelled brand new, the paint was right up our alley, and we loved the gorgeous hardwood floors downstairs.
We opened the pantry to start filling it up and realized the owner had left us some cleaning products with a note to thank us in advance for keeping the place tip-top. They went on to explain that they hoped we would continue to use the exact products that they left since they knew they were the best for the home.
The one item they left for the floor was the Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner. I’d never used one before but I was willing to give it a shot.
Long story short, we’ve never went back.
The homes in my area are all significantly old and most people have removed dated carpeting to find the homes’ original hardwood beneath, perfectly intact. It’s so important to keep the history of the home alive and proper floor care is absolutely a part of that, meaning no super harsh chemicals or homemade cleaners.
My favorite features of Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner:
- It doesn’t leave a film
- It’s Greenguard Gold certification means it’s safe to use in home and around family

Thank you so much! I got it from Forever 21, but it was purchased last year.
