The Moment That Inspired Me to Change for the Better

November 14, 2016

This post is sponsored by Charles Schwab but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

I’m sitting in a hotel room here in Texas reflecting on the last week or so. I’ve met so many new family members, friends, strangers on planes, and the one question I seemed to answer ad nauseam was “What do you do for a living?”

Now depending on who you’re talking to, the reactions are always different when I explain that my husband and I are both full-time bloggers. I usually have to take a dip back to my media/print publication background in San Diego to explain, “I was in the journalism field and took it for a spin on my own.”

The move to starting my own business seemed natural and I never really had a time between careers where I had an “a-ha” moment.

It wasn’t until our trip to the UK that a pivotal moment happened that knocked me between the eyes and sent me and my family on a crash course towards spontaneity.

FYI – I was the least spontaneous person you could probably find. One of my favorite pastimes is making lists 😉 but something was very different this past spring.

We found ourselves sitting in an awesome apartment in the city center of Edinburgh, Scotland with just ourselves, a bunch of great restaurants in walking distance, and your typical city noises seeping through the cracked window. Did we really need all the clutter and the big house at home? Was a suburb where we absolutely wanted to be? It quickly became clear that we wanted more, just with less things and a smaller place! Instead of Edinburgh, we opted for a city just a bit up the street: Los Angeles.

Not only did this trip cement a new city and way of life for my family, but it proved to me that sometimes spontaneity creates a path worth traveling. Like tonight: we flew from Nashville to Houston, promptly walked up the our gate where our flight to LA left in mere minutes, and canceled our flights. Why? To rent a car and drive from Texas to California and adventure as a family! We deserve the time to unwind and make these memories to cherish forever.

Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it simultaneously. We really want things to stay the same but better.
